COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Thieves have made off with 10 bronze gates from inside a historic mausoleum in Ohio, just as volunteers were readying the site for two Halloween-themed fund-raisers.
Officials say the gates were stolen from Green Lawn Abbey in Columbus early Monday. A stained-glass window was smashed to gain entry into the two-story mausoleum, which resembles a Greek temple with four columns and was built in 1927.
Kate Matheny, president of the Green Lawn Abbey Preservation Association, says the gates each weighed up to 50 pounds. Investigators say they assume the gates were stolen to sell for scrap.
The mausoleum preservation group says it's going ahead with the fund-raising events inside the mausoleum, including a Halloween night magic show.
