NEWARK, Ohio -- Newark police are alerting residents to keep pets and children indoors after a family pet was killed by a coyote.
Around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Gene Reiter let his 6-year-old Pekingese dog, Myling, out of his house for just a moment.
Reiter had no idea it would be one of his last memories of Myling.
While outside, a coyote came around the corner of Reiter's house and grabbed then dragged Myling away by his neck.
Reiter tried to save his pet, but it was too late.
"Well, I came out with her. She went under the tree, and it came around the building before I [could] realize what was going on," said Reiter.
The Newark police is working with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to capture the coyote or coyotes in the area.
In the meantime, police are asking residents in the area to keep small pets and children inside as much as possible and to call them if a coyote is spotted.
