W.Va. Drafting Rules For Inmate Medical Copays

»  Comments | Post a Comment

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.
The agency that oversees West Virginia's regional jail network is writing rules to charge inmates nominal fees for medical services.

West Virginia Regional Jail and Correctional Facility Authority operations chief John King says the policy should be ready forpublic review Dec. 1.

The Legislature authorized the authority to charge inmates up to $5 for some medical services. The fee could generate about $250,000 a year.
A similar fee is charged to inmates being held in state correctional facilities.

Inmates will be charged for services such as diagnosis and treatment of communicable diseases, self-inflicted injuries and preventative services.

King says fees won't be charged for emergency and state-required services.
