UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio -- A family dog is being called a hero after saving its owners from a house fire early Wednesday.

NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.

The fire broke out at about 12:30 a.m. on the first floor of a home on the 1900 block of Chatfield Road.

Amy Armstrong and her 15-year-old son, Ben, were inside the home when the blaze started.

One of the family’s two dogs, Snickers, started rattling its crate to alert the family, according to fire officials. A smoke alarm started sounding at the same time Snickers was making a commotion in his crate.

“I woke up at 12:30 a.m. with the sound of the dog trying to get out of his crate, and so that's the sound that woke me up. I could tell it was really smokey in the house,” Amy said.

Amy said she immediately grabbed Ben and went to her bedroom to call 911.

Upper Arlington firefighters used a ladder to rescue Amy and Ben from a second-floor deck. The family couldn't reach the animals; they were on the home's first floor.

“I knew I couldn't go downstairs, and then I just started hollering to the neighbor to show them where the animals were,” Amy said.

Firefighters pulled Snickers, Lucy the dog and a cat from the burning home.

The pets all received oxygen at the scene and were taken to Ohio State University Veterinary Hospital.

The cat died at the hospital Wednesday morning from smoke inhalation.

The dogs remained at the hospital and were being treated for smoke inhalation. The hospital said the dogs were expected to be OK.

UA fire investigators concluded an examination of the scene and determined the fire originated in the kitchen from an unknown source.

Damage was estimated at about $100,000.

Approximately 30 firefighters from Upper Arlington, Grandview Heights and Columbus responded to the fire.
