COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A would-be robbery suspect picked the wrong motel room, and a 70-year-old woman fatally shot the man Wednesday night.

The suspect attempted to rob a group of people in a motel room and was fatally shot, police said.
The incident happened at about 9:15 p.m. at the Continent Inn Motel at 6225 Zumstein Dr.
The door was standing open on a motel room. The suspect walked into the room, showed a firearm and started to rob several people who were in town for the Quarter Horse Congress, CPD said.
A 70-year-old woman pulled out a handgun and shot the robbery suspect, investigators said.
The suspect fled to the parking lot. The suspect was identified later as 25-year-old Wayne M. Winston. Winston recently moved to the Columbus area from St. Louis, Mo.
Columbus police arrived on the scene at about 9:20 p.m. and found Winston in the lot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the woman might have saved the lives of the people with her in the room.
The woman was transported to CPD Headquarters and was interviewed by detectives.
She was released from custody and won’t face charges, CPD said.
Police considered the city’s 69th homicide of 2009 a self-defense shooting.
