COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Officials say recent Ohio Supreme Court rulings are forcing the state to review whether scores of inmates and thousands of parolees were sentenced properly.
The court voided sentences in three cases, finding the judges did not follow Ohio's 1996 "truth-in-sentencing" law. Ohio prisons director Terry Collins said Monday that judges failed to spell out if the sentences included post-release supervision or for how long.
Collins says the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction must now re-examine other cases, including those of nearly 15,000 former prisoners under state supervision and more than 200 inmates returned to prison for violating post-release control.
Collins' agency is letting crime victims know that state supervision may end for some offenders.
Any disciplinary action could be determined by the Ohio Supreme Court.
