Students Withhold Newspaper Over Suicide Obituary

»  Comments | Post a Comment

STOW, Ohio -- Ohio students are refusing to publish their high school newspaper because the principal won't let them include a photo of a student who committed suicide.

Principal Susan Schur says Stow-Munroe Falls High School outside Akron has other students who are "very much at risk" and says she's concerned about triggering "destructive behavior."

Lyndsey Sager, the 17-year-old editor of the Stohion newspaper, argues that it has run memorials in the past to students who killed themselves.

The photo is the yearbook picture of the boy who died in September and was submitted by his parents, who also wrote a letter that Schur approved for the paper. It doesn't mention the death but thanks the school community for its support.
