COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Neighbors tried to save a terminally ill man from his burning home late Monday, but it was too late.

NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.

Emergency officials were called to 117 Chicago Ave. on a report of a fire at about 8:50 p.m. Monday.

Upon arrival, firefighters noticed a small amount of smoke and entered the home to investigate.

James Yantis, 55, was found in his bed and was pronounced dead at the West Side scene.

Firefighters said Yantis was smoking in bed and there were nearby oxygen tanks.

Yantis’ son told NBC 4 his father wasn’t supposed to be smoking.

A neighbor tried to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher but wasn’t able to extinguish the flames.

The fire was contained to the bedroom.
