Ohio High Court To Consider Vote On Slots

»  Comments | Post a Comment

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Supreme Court tried to zero in on legal questions as lawyers debated whether Ohio voters should have a chance to overturn newly authorized racetrack slots.

Justices spent much of their time during Wednesday's oral arguments drilling the attorney for LetOhioVote.org on the legal basis for his group's lawsuit.

The suit says Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner violated her constitutional duty when she rejected petitions for a referendum on the slots-like video lottery terminals. Brunner's attorney says the slots language specifically shields the new game from a referendum.

A decision in the case is expected before Sept. 15.

Also Wednesday, the court rejected an attempt to introduce evidence that the state says suggests gambling giant Penn National has a financial hand in the anti-slots effort.
