COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Authorities said multiple shots were fired and a suspect was injured when a CPD officer was forced to return gunfire late Wednesday night.

Undercover officers were serving a search warrant in the area of St. Clair and East 5th avenues on the city’s near North Side and reported shots fired to CPD dispatch.
Officers arrived in the area of 1000 St. Clair Avenue at about 9:44 p.m.
Officers said they spotted several individuals in the area.
“Just multiple gunshots as we arrived on scene -- continuous gunfire -- rapid gunfire from some kind of semi-automatic to an automatic rifle,” CPD Sgt. Matthew Streng said.
An armed suspect, who was later identified as 19-year-old Allen E. Caldwell, fled the scene and was confronted by an officer who observed a firearm in his hand, according to CPD.

SWAT was called to the scene and searched several surrounding homes for additional suspects.
Several individuals were taken into custody and questioned.
Caldwell was charged with one third-degree felony count of discharging weapons.
Caldwell was transported to OSU Medical Center Main in stable condition. An update on his condition wasn't available currently.
