CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Family members of an Ohio soldier who committed suicide want to travel to Iraq for the military hearing of four men accused of abusing him and others in the platoon. The father and grandfather of Pvt. Keiffer Wilhelm say by making the trip they hope to learn more about the 19-year-old's death from a gunshot wound to the head Aug. 4.
The charges against the four soldiers include cruelty and maltreatment of subordinates. The military says there is no direct evidence that the soldiers' alleged misconduct caused Wilhelm's death. Wilhelm's father, Shane Wilhelm, says the two round-trip plane tickets and visas will cost about $8,000. He and the grandfather are asking the public to donate to a Keiffer Wilhelm memorial fund at FirstMerit Bank branches.
