CENTRAL OHIO -- Franklin Heights High School junior Julie Nolen loves volleyball so much, she wasn't about to let a failed operating levy stop her and her friends from playing.
She and three of her best friends approached her mother last month for ideas and soon the ball was rolling.
The girls contacted coaches at all four high schools in the South-Western City School District, without the help of the school system, to try to find interested players.
Through word of mouth and the Facebook social-networking site, the group organized a meeting at Gantz Park.
"The parking lot was full," says Julie's mother Nicole.
Organizers contacted the Grove City YMCA to rent a court for weekly games.
The first matches take place Saturday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. There will be two matches each Saturday.
Grove City High School has three teams, Franklin Heights and Central Crossing High Schools both have two teams. Westland High School has one team.
More than 80 girls are taking part. Each pays $30 for a T-shirt and a portion of the court rental fee.
The YMCA says it was happy to work with the group of young people and their parents.
T-Shirts Plus gave the girls a good deal on their team shirts.
Each school has a different colored shirt, representing the school's colors.
"Now we have a second chance at it, we're all just ready to go," Julie said, referring to Saturday night's games.
She hopes to have a senior night and banquet at the end of the season.
The Nolens say they hear soccer and cross country players are also organizing their own leagues.
Grove City High School Parent Roger White says his daughter Haleigh and her teammates from last year’s Cross Country Team have formed the Grove City Running Club. The club has already had three meets. They practice after school every day.
