COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A man was sentenced Monday for his part in a 15-month-old’s death in November 2008.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.
Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Richard S. Sheward sentenced Allen Hiltbrunner to 10 years in prison on a voluntary manslaughter charge and six years for a felonious assault charge.
Baby Sean Ray was taken to Nationwide Children's Hospital Tuesday, Nov. 25, after police received a call that he was having difficulty breathing, NBC 4 reported.
Witnesses said there wasn't a phone inside the Reeb Avenue house where Sean lived with his mother and her live-in boyfriend Hiltbrunner.
Instead, Hiltbrunner took the baby to a nearby convenience store to call 911.
Hiltbrunner was watching Sean when the injury occurred and initially told investigators he fell down the stairs.
Sean died from his injuries at the hospital.
Hiltbrunner was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant from Muskingum County.
An autopsy determined the cause of death was blunt-force trauma to the head.
Sean’s death was ruled a homicide, and Hiltbrunner originally was charged with one count of murder, two counts of child endangerment and one count of felonious assault in late November.
Hiltbrunner originally pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.
