CENTRAL OHIO -- An Obetz home was filled with carbon monoxide after a vehicle accidentally was left running, and eight people became sick.
NBC 4 showed you how to keep your family safe.
When medics arrived at the Amwell Drive home Sunday evening, the level of carbon monoxide was five times the level considered toxic.
Officials said the incident raises concern as autumn and cooler weather approaches.
People soon will be turning on heaters and using their fireplaces.
Columbus fire officials said now is the time to get those things inspected.
Turning the switch on the thermostat or lighting a fire without an inspection can pour carbon monoxide into your home, putting you and your family at risk.
Scott Guiler, of All Ohio Masonry, said company crews will be busy sending cameras into fireplaces to check for blockages, check the smoke chamber and flue tiles.
Even if money is tight, don’t skip on safety, officials advised.
That inspection could save your and your family's life.
