Fund That Helps AEP Customers Is Out Of Cash

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A program that helps lower-income Ohio customers pay their American Electric Power bills has temporarily shut down because it has run out of money.

The nonprofit organization that handles the AEP Neighbor to Neighbor fund says it has been overwhelmed with requests for assistance and must stop taking applications until Oct. 1, when it receives a new infusion of funding.

AEP has so far provided $1.5 million for the program.

Officials say more than 5,100 households have turned to Neighbor to Neighbor in the last four months.

Assistance grant provided by the program average about $264, with $600 the maximum possible amount.
