COLUMBUS, Ohio -- State officials say Ohio's jobless rate has fallen for the first time in a year -- to 10.8 percent in August, from 11.2 percent in July.
The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services says the decline follows 12 months of rising joblessness.
But officials say the dip is not cause for too much optimism, because both services and goods-producing industries lost more jobs in August. Department spokesman Brian Harter said Friday that the main reason unemployment went down was that students were returning to school, leaving fewer people actively looking for work.
The number of workers unemployed in Ohio last month was 641,000, down from 666,000 in July. But nonfarm payroll employment also declined, by 30,100.
