38 College Students Involved In Bus-Versus-Dump-Truck Crash

ATHENS COUNTY, Ohio -- A charter bus carrying college students was involved in a crash with a dump truck late Monday afternoon.

NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.

The following information was taken from an official release.

Southeast Ohio EMS District, (SEOEMS) responded to a motor vehicle collision at 4:39 p.m. Monday.

The crash was on U.S. Route 33, east of Nelsonville, near the Athens-Hocking county line .

On arrival, SEOEMS personnel found a charter bus crashed into the rear of a dump truck that was turning in to the Athens-Hocking Landfill.

The drivers of both vehicles were injured in the collision.

The charter bus was carrying 37 Hocking College students at the time of the collision. The students escaped the bus by using the vehicle’s escape windows.

Emergency Medical Service units from SEOEMS and Hocking County EMS were on scene along with firefighters from York Township volunteer fire department, Nelsonville fire department and Stan Township volunteer fire department.

Paramedics triaged the students and the drivers of both vehicles.

The driver of the dump truck was extricated from the truck and transported to Doctors Hospital Nelsonville by SEOEMS.

The bus driver was pinned in the wreckage of the bus and had to be cut free from the wreckage.

The force of the collision caused the bus wreckage to amputate the driver’s right leg below the knee.

After approximately 30 minutes of work, firefighters and paramedics were able to free the bus driver from the wreckage and he was transported by Hocking County EMS to Hocking Valley Community Hospital in Logan and later transferred to Grant Medical Center in Columbus.

Eleven of the 37 students from the bus were treated. Six were treated on scene but refused transport to the hospital. Five other students with minor injuries were transported by SEOEMS to local hospitals. Two students were transported to O’Bleness Memorial Hospital in Athens, and three were transported to Doctors Hospital Nelsonville. The remaining students were transported to Hocking College by college officials.

The scene of the crash was cleared by 6:26 p.m.

No emergency workers were injured during the incident.
