TOLEDO, Ohio
A bridge in Toledo will be equipped with an array of solar panels, helping transportation officials to determine if the technology can produced energy savings on other highway projects.
Installation of solar panels will begin this summer for the Veterans' Glass City Skyway, which carries Interstate 280 across
the Maumee River. The project is being funded with a $1.5 million federal grant.
The panels are expected to produce 280 kilowatt-hours of electricity, powering the bridge's pylon lighting and part of its roadway lighting.
The University of Toledo will conduct research on the energy produced by the photovoltaic cells.
The project is the first of its kind along an Ohio highway.
