New Study Links High E.Coli Levels To Ill Swimmers

»  Comments | Post a Comment

New research released by The Ohio State University reported that there is a direct link with high E.coli levels and swimmers becoming ill. The report also states that testing for E.coli can take up to 18 hours and that swimming advisories are usually posted a day late.

So NBC 4 asked the Ohio Department of Health if they feel that the way they are testing for E.coli is safe?

"The way we are testing now is the best approved method that we have available," said Mary Clifton with the Ohio Department of Health.

Clifton said ODH sets the standards used by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for testing park water and that she understands the concern about faster results.

"There is a push to get more rapid testing. There isn't an improved standard test yet to do rapid testing," said Clifton.

Clifton said that the term rapid test may be misleading as current rapid tests still can take up to eight hours to give results, and the tests might not be as effective.

"I don't know that it will resolve all those issues with true exposure at the water," Clifton explained.

Swimmers we talked to at Alum Creek State park, feel they are safe.

"We have been coming here for four years and usually come all summer along and don't have a problem," said Deirdre Donaldson.

"They are doing a good job and it was my understanding that  they do test every so many days," said Cindy Myers.

The report said that better methods need to be in place to protect lakes from being contaminated in the first place.

So what can you do to minimize your risk of exposure? ODH recommends trying not to drink the water while swimming and showering after you swim.
