Newark Zoning To Limit New Downtown Businesses

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The city of Newark has been trying to make its Downtown a destination point for visitors to Licking County.

By tearing down older buildings and updating others, the city is trying to attract new businesses to the area.

But with a new piece of legislation, not all new businesses are wanted.

"I think it's very clear that certain businesses will bring in more tourist dollars or more out of town dollars then others," stated Newark Director of Law Doug Sassen.

The new legislation, which currently passed committee, says that no new tattoo parlors, pawns shops or auto-repair businesses will be allowed to set up shop Downtown. Also, businesses that need a liquor permit will now have to get a conditional use permit.

Downtown business owner Ed Maddern is concerned over this legislation.

"Limiting any type of foot traffic into our area, ultimately, is going to hurt us in some small part," says Maddern.

Maddern started his graphic design business here in the Arcade, and he does work for several of the Downtown restaurants and tattoo parlors.

He feels this new legislation could hurt his bottom line ... if businesses such as bars are restricted.

"And they may be bringing customers from other parts of the area, county, city, and that provides exposure for me in areas perhaps I have not been able to get to," explained Maddern.

Maddern feels that all businesses should be given a chance -- no matter what they are.

Currently, only nine stores fill the Downtown Arcade, and Maddern feels this legislation would only keep these empty store fronts vacant longer.
