Pictures and words normally associated with porn web sites are common-place on Craigslist adult services ads.
Seventeen State Attorneys General are turning up the pressure on Craigslist to rein in the ads, because they say, prostitution and trafficking of children are rampant on the site.
"We have seen examples of this, of essentially sex trafficking through the site that they are facilitating by doing nothing to stop it," said Richard Cordray, the Attorney General of Ohio.
Over the last few months the AGs from several states, have been in talks with Craigslist's CEO and founder, trying to find a solution through dialog.
Now, the talks have failed, and on Aug. 24 the State Attorneys General faxed a letter to Craigslist requesting they take down the adult services portion of their web site.
"We've found evidence of potential trafficking of sex involving children. The adult section is very loosely policed if at all by Craigslist. That's a concern now. It's sloping into potentially involving children, which is indefensible," said Cordray.
"Craigslist is committed to being socially responsible, and when it comes to adult services ads, that includes aggressively combating violent crime and human rights violations, including human trafficking," said Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster on his Craigslistblog.
The AGs would like to have a third party verify policing on the site, but Cordray says, "if we don't get something like that through this process of discussion and negotiation, our next step is to take legal action if it is warranted."
