A frightening scenario: A woman hears a baby’s cry outside her door in the dead of night, but thinks twice before opening her door, and her hesitation may have stopped her from becoming the victim of a crime.
Rose Lemaine says she heard some bumping around outside her Farmville, N.C. home early last Wednesday morning.
She got up to see what was happening and then heard a baby crying from her back porch.
Lemaine says she almost opened her door to help the baby but noticed her dog was barking and jerking on its leash.
She woke up her stepsons and called police.
After turning out all the lights in the home, Lemaine and her stepsons say they saw a tall man dressed in all-black standing outside their home.
The man eventually walked away.
The Pitt County sheriff's office says deputies couldn't find anyone when they arrived, but they believe it's possible someone was using a baby recording to try to lure Lemaine outside. She says she wants to make sure no one else falls for this scheme.
"It was very, very scary because I felt useless. I couldn't do anything, and I was crying because I was worrying about if there was a baby out there. I worried about the dogs getting to it and I wanted to go out there and try to help it. They're like, 'no'. It was just scary."
