MARYSVILLE, Ohio – A male was found dead inside a Marysville home that caught fire early Wednesday, and local fire crews have released his identification.
NBC 4 Photojournalist Shawn Holmes reported with the FAST FACTS from the scene.
Marysville fire crews were dispatched to 1287 Cinnamon Dr. shortly before 12:30 a.m. on a report of a house fire.
The home was fully involved when crews arrived on the scene; flames were shooting from the windows, and roof was flaming.
The fire was so intense that the home next door, at 1281 Cinnamon Dr., caught fire and also suffered heavy damage.
Crews controlled the fires and took a defensive approach. Initial reports indicated no one was inside the flaming home.
Then, people who lived in the home at 1287 Cinnamon Dr. said a male could be inside the home.
Apparently, the family was out visiting neighborhood friends but one male resident stayed home. The residents couldn't immediately confirm the whereabouts of the missing male.
Fire crews started a five-hour long search for the possible victim.
The body of a male victim was located on the second floor shortly after 5:30 a.m., according to Marysville assistant fire Chief Jay Riley.
Marysville fire later identified the victim as Scott Akins.
The Division of State Fire Marshal was not confirming the victim's identification early Wednesday afternoon but waiting on confirmation from the coroner's office.
The cause of death and the cause of the fire remained unclear.
Neighbors told NBC 4 Akins was the father in the family; officials did not confirm that information currently.
Several nearby residents and witnesses reported there was a loud "boom" shortly before the fire started.
Neighbor Jeff Daniels was out walking his dog when he said he heard what sounded like a smoke detector going off at about 11:15 p.m. Daniels said he could not determine the beeping sound's origin and returned home with his pets.
At about 12:15 a.m. Terry Gamble, who is a firefighter & EMT, said he noticed and smelled smoke drifting over U.S. Route 33 on his way home from the Marysville Honda plant.
He turned off the highway to investigate and saw smoke at 1287 Cinnamon Dr.
Gamble went to the home that was on fire and adjacent homes and banged on the doors to alert residents to evacuate.
Marysville fire and the Division of State Marshal continued to investigate.
Additional information was not immediately available.
