COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A local firefighter remains in critical condition after he collapsed while fighting a fire on the city's Northeast Side Saturday night.

Columbus fire was called to Roberts Street at about 10:45 p.m. Saturday on reports of a house fire.
While extinguishing the fire, 61-year-old Lieutenant Mike Polaski collapsed in the home's basement.
Polaski's station was first on the scene, and he was supervising a crew in the basement of the home when he collapsed.
Crew members immediately removed Polaski from the basement and started life-saving measures at the scene and during transport to the hospital.
He was taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition.
Polaski suffered cardiac arrest at the scene, according to CFD Battalion Chief David Whiting.
Polaski is a 37-year veteran of the Columbus Division of Fire and is a former Ohio State football player from the late 1960s.
"Anytime it's one of your own, it's not a good thing," Whiting said. "They're distraught."
