COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The snow starting falling early Tuesday morning, but the volunteers of Meals on Wheels bundled up and went to work.
In the snow, the group delivered more than 2,000 meals to those who can't leave their homes to get food.
On days like Tuesday, the clients got something else -- emergency food baskets. They will have the chance to use the baskets if the weather becomes too bad Wednesday, and the volunteers are not able to make it out to the homes.
It was just last week when clients had to use their first emergency food bags.
Carolyn Morton has diabetes and congestive heart failure and is unable to leave her home. She says the Meals on Wheels program is her way of making it in a world that doesn't allow her to get out and about.
"It is a lifesaver and without them, I'm telling you, I couldn't do without them," she said.
Morton's food comes though the program under the watchful eye and LifeCare Alliance -- and from the hands of delivery driver Lynne Norman.
Norman says, "I just became attached to her, like a sister."
And while the food is critical, the emergency packs could be huge Wednesday, there is something to be said for the visits and what they can do for the human spirit.
Morton says, "You get to know them as a family, you get a smile, or a how are you?"
The idea is to make sure every client has two blizzard boxes on hand for emergency situations.
After the first one was used with the weekend storm, volunteers made sure those who needed to fill up had exactly what they needed Tuesday.
