COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner has subpoenaed the organizers of LetOhioVote.org, the group behind a referendum that could stop Ohio's seven horse-racing tracks from offering video slot machines, called video lottery terminals.
Brunner wants to find out who is supplying the $1.55 million in funding the group received from Virginia-based corporation New Models. New Models does not disclose its donors.
LetOhioVote is waiting for signature verification for the slot machine issue to be placed on the November ballot.
Spokesperson Carlo LoParo told NBC 4 that LetOhioVote has fully complied with campaign finance laws.
LoParo described Brunner's actions as "a fishing expedition that will most certainly waste tax dollars and time."
