CANTON, Ohio -- A woman's quest to find information about her long-lost aunt in Ohio has yielded several surprises.
After being institutionalized for several years, the aunt was still alive. But her own children didn't even know.
Their cousin, Susan Hadley of Washington, D.C., found Elinor Laughlin Del Vecchio recently at Colonial Nursing Home in Canton.
In 1936, Del Vecchio had been committed to the former Massillon State Hospital with a diagnosis of "post-partum psychosis." At the time, she was the mother of two infants.
She would remain institutionalized for 41 years. Her two children were raised by a paternal aunt.
Hadley helped reunite Del Vecchio with her son and daughter, now in their 70s. The niece hopes the story will help other families.
