COLUMBUS, Ohio -- About 24 hours after a crime alert on OSU's campus, student-safety officers want students, faculty and staff to know that you don't have to be alone on the streets.
OSU police report a pair of suspects robbed a group of men at gunpoint Thursday night in the 200 block of East 14th Avenue.
But walking alone in any area on and around campus doesn't have to be lonely.
The student-safety officers are working hard, handing out rides to those who need it.
Last year, the group handed out 20,000 rides free of charge.
For current students, they see a tremendous need for the escort service provided to students.
"We try to walk together. Scared when I walk home alone," Alex Yapalater says.
Samantha Clark says she sees students make poor choices all the time.
"The other night I saw a girl walking alone to her home. Scary. She was not in a good area," she said.
The safety officers say that is part of what they do, even doing impromptu rides to some they see in bad parts of the community.
Seth Cooper is an OSU student-safety officer.
"We like to get these people and educate them to what is going on. Sometimes even say it's a good thing you came with us," he said.
The crews run special duty during events such as basketball, football games and concerts. Cooper says he doesn't want to be a well kept secret anymore and hears seniors say, "I could have used this four or five years I was here."
If you are interested in using the escort program you can call 614-292-3322.
