DELAWARE, Ohio -- A local couple and almost 50 people are in trouble with the law after a New Year's Eve party in Delaware.

NBC 4 reported got answers on a story that all parents can learn from.

Many people celebrate New Year's Eve -- some with alcohol. But it's that alleged combination that left nearly 50 people facing serious charges.

The Delaware County sheriff's office said Ronald and Cathy Swiggett hosted a New Year's Eve party at their Dale Ford Road home and provided alcohol to nearly 50 underage people.

Twenty-two juveniles will be charged with underage consumption, a misdemeanor offense.

Twenty-six young adults ages 18 to 20 also will be charged with underage consumption, a misdemeanor offense.

The owners of the home, Ronald and Cathy Swiggett, were charged with contributing to the unruliness of juveniles and providing alcohol to underage persons.

Sheriff Walter Davis said this is a clear message that these alleged actions are inappropriate and that taking keys from those younger than 21 and still serving alcohol is not OK.

NBC 4 tried to contact someone at the residence. A female at the home told us, "No comment."

Davis provided statistics he said show why his office is concerned about alcohol use among the young.

“Parents should model responsible behavior for their teens. Hosting parties where alcohol is permitted sends the wrong message to young people who are at a pivotal stage in their lives,” Davis said.

According to the Youth Risk Behavior Survey by Delaware and Morrow Mental Health and Recovery Services underage drinking is widespread:
- 35 percent of Delaware County High School students reported having at least one drink in the last 30 days
- 73 percent of high-school students who drank in the last 30 days reported binge drinking (five or more drinks in a row)
- 42 percent of the 17- to 18-year-old Delaware County students had their first drink at age 14 or younger
