LAURELVILLE, Ohio -- The family of a 7-year-old who fell into an icy pond said the boy continues to fight for his life Monday.
NBC 4's Tanya Hutchins reported from the scene Sunday night.
Alexander James Hanson-Cyrus fell into an icy pond Sunday evening.
He apparently was under the ice for about an hour before he was rescued by medics. He was unresponsive during rescue.
Hanson-Cyrus' aunt told NBC 4 the boy remains very ill Monday but he made it through two surgeries at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
The Hocking County sheriff's office said Hanson-Cyrus fell into the man-made pond during a birthday party around 5 p.m. Sunday. The pond is located on Union Road.
Med-Flight transported Hanson-Cyrus to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus.
Deputies said Hanson-Cyrus and another boy left the house without notifying an adult.
Hanson-Cyrus fell through the ice, and the second boy tried to save him, but Cyrus slipped out of his coat and went under the water, deputies said.
The other boy ran back to the house and notified the adults, who then tried to rescue Hanson-Cyrus until the fire department arrived. Deputies said the adults in the water had to get out before succumbing to the elements themselves.
The family told NBC 4 they are thankful to Hanson-Cyrus' rescuers, especially the diver.
A supervisor with the Hocking County Emergency Medical Services told NBC 4 Sunday he has heard of a person surviving after being under cold water for an hour and a half. He said children often have a better chance of survival.
