PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- An Ohio transit agency is replacing antiquated bus fare boxes that didn't indicate if a rider paid the full price.
Next summer the Laketran transit agency in northeast Ohio's Lake County will replace fare boxes, which are about 50 years old and operate on the honor system, with an automated system.
The agency estimates about 3.5 percent of fares are not paid.
The system annually collects about $1.5 million from riders, but fare boxes also attract metal washers and drink tokens. The system carries about 1 million riders annually and connects with the Cleveland transit lines.
