SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Four people were killed and seven others were injured in a bus crash near Springfield Thursday.
The crash occurred on Interstate 70 at state Route 40 at about 1 p.m. and involved a shuttle bus from the Creative Learning Workshop.
The crash occurred when a westbound 2006 Mack commercial truck, driven by Zygmunt Wieckowski, age 59 of Chicago, Ill., lost control and crossed the median into eastbound traffic. The commercial vehicle clipped a 2007 Acura, driven by Robin McCann, age 45, of Cuyahoga Falls.
McCann was not injured in the crash.
The commercial vehicle continued on, striking an eastbound 2008 Chevrolet 17-passenger motor coach driven by Traci Williams, 42, of Springfield.
Williams and three passengers -- Kenny Fry, age 61; Lonnie Acton, age 28; and Alonso Ruffin, age 37; all of Springfield -- were pronounced deceased on scene by the Clark County coroner’s office.
The six additional passengers in the motor coach and the driver of the commercial vehicle were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
The names and conditions of the six passengers were released Friday afternoon:
Alec Courts, age 26 of Springfield, OH, was transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center.
Wayne Barnes, age 22 of Springfield, OH, was transported to Madison County Hospital. He was later transferred to Grant Medical Center.
Zachariah Puddock, age 30 of Springfield, OH, was transported to Madison County Hospital. He was later transferred to Grant Medical Center.
Elizabeth Tharp, age 31 of Springfield, OH, was transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center. She was later transferred to Miami Valley Hospital.
Jonelle Blume, age 51 of Springfield, OH, was transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center. She was later transferred to Miami Valley Hospital.
Danielle Thompson, age 23 of Springfield, OH, was transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center. She was later transferred to Miami Valley Hospital.
The shuttle bus was serving the Creative Learning Workshop, a Leffel Lane center that provides vocational services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The bus was en route to an assisted-living facility.
The commercial truck wasn't carrying a load, officials said.
The crash remained under investigation. Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the crash.
I-70 reopened at approximately 7 p.m.
OSP officials said the crash is an example of how important it is to drive slowly and exercise caution when driving in snowy conditions.
"I just think it's important with weather like this that if you don't have to be on the roadways, to just try and stay home. That's where you're the safest at. If you can stay off the road and stay home safe, that's the best thing," said Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Craig Cvetan. "We're still investigating the crash but obviously weather like this does not help in situations like this."
The investigation is continuing and officials are questioning how fast the driver of the tanker was traveling at the time of the crash.
