COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A winter storm moved through Central Ohio Thursday, bringing 3 to 4 inches of snow in some areas and up to 6 inches of snowfall in others.

Storm Team 4's Jym Ganahl said four inches of snow was forecast before 9 p.m. and and additional 1 inch of snowfall on Friday.

The snowfall was expected to lighten after 7 p.m., with an increase around 9 p.m. for a few hours before tapering off.

Ganahl said the roads are hazardous because the cold surface temperatures cause rapid icing.

Many schools in Central Ohio issued early dismissals in preparation of the snowfall.

Snow has been falling for 11 straight days in Central Ohio and with the cold, Thursday's precipitation is another fluffy snowfall that will allow for considerable blowing and drifting after the storm passes.

Winds on Friday will not cause blowing and drifting snow until the afternoon. Then, the roads traveling north and south will be impacted.

Wind chills will be near -10 degrees by Friday night as lows drop to 0.

Columbus city officials said road crews began treating the streets at noon and were to continue to do so throughout Thursday and overnight. The city said it is using extra vehicles from other departments to help.

According to the Ohio Department of Transportation, a total of 128 snow plows are working on interstates, state and U.S. routes, ramps and bridges throughout the eight-county region in Central Ohio. Overnight and Thursday morning, crews loaded salt and prepared vehicles so that they are road worthy for the hours of service that are expected.
