COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Residents are still awaiting a decision from casino developer Penn National on an alternative casino site to the Arena District.
The company said Friday it hopes to be in a position to make an announcement within the next few days.
Suggested sites like the Polaris Fashion Place area and Cooper Stadium have not gained any traction as the discussions continue, but the spotlight continues to shine on the far south and west sides.
Lawmakers wanted the decision by Friday to they could begin the process required for a statewide vote.
Penn National announced the company purchased the Arena District property that voters approved for a casino in November.
The company had a time constraint that made the purchase necessary to hold onto the land in case the alternative casino site does not materialize.
Sources tell NBC 4 that the company is continuing negotiations on two sites: an area of unused land on the city's far south side along U.S. Route 23, south of Interstate 270 and the former Delphi plant on the west side.
Franklin Township trustees voted Friday 2-1 to support a casino if it can work out a revenue-sharing plan with the City of Columbus as part of a land annexation of a casino site.
The city has agreed to negotiate with Franklin Township on a revenue-sharing plan in the event of a land annexation for a casino.
The trustees retain the option to rescind their support and pursue legal action if no agreement is reached.
