CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Officials in Cincinnati want a review of the county's radio system for firefighters.
The system has experienced dropped calls.
Hamilton County Commission President David Pepper has asked the communications staff for an update on the issue, which is due in a few weeks.
County taxpayers spent $35 million on the new digital system, which was activated in 2003. It replaced a fire radio system that dated to the 1940s.
Cincinnati Fire Union President Marc Monahan says dropped calls occur when more than one firefighter tries to talk at once. Other problems include garbled transmissions due to background noise like engines and burning buildings. In addition, metal construction blocks communication when firefighters are in large buildings.
