TOLEDO, Ohio -- Troopers seized 44 pounds of cocaine during a traffic stop in Lucas County last week.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the traffic stop occurred Friday along the Ohio Turnpike near milepost 57 at about 1:15 p.m.
Troopers stopped a 2005 Ford F-150 with California registration, towing a flatbed trailer without registration for marked lanes and registration violations. Troopers observed criminal indicators and a Patrol drug-sniffing canine alerted to the vehicle. A probable cause search revealed 20 kilos of cocaine.
The driver, Audel Rios, 31, of Meriden, Conn., and passenger, Christian Paul Carrillo-Meza, 27, of Mexico, were charged with aggravated possession of cocaine, and aggravated trafficking, both first-degree felonies.
The suspects were incarcerated in the Lucas County Jail. If convicted, both suspects could face up to 20 years in prison and a $40,000 fine.
