UNION COUNTY, Ohio -- Short-terms layoffs or furloughs for union employees were instituted by the Union County sheriff's office Wednesday.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.
Union County Sheriff Rocky Nelson announced the short-term layoffs Wednesday.
Union employees -- including deputies, dispatchers, sergeants and corporals -- were to receive nine days off without pay during 2010.
The layoffs were to be spread out throughout 2010 to maintain operational efficiency and have the least impact on services provided by the sheriff's office.
"Rather than completely layoff at least four deputies right now for the entire year, and perhaps more later on, this option keeps our staffing the same, and we don't have to cut services to the public," Nelson said.
The layoffs came as a result of the sheriff's salary budget being cut 5.1 percent this year.
