AKRON, Ohio -- A New Jersey company is testing a new type of slot machine in Ohio gas stations that the company says are legal because winning is based totally on skill.
The machines marketed by Reel Vegas Slots have been placed in eight Spee-D-Foods gas stations in Akron and Canton.
The Flanders, N.J.-based company devised the game by converting real slot machines taken from Atlantic City. But while traditional slots use computer chips to decide winners, players must manually stop three spinning reels on the new machines to win.
Winners also won't get cash, but instead can redeem earnings for gas, phone cards, food and other items, including iPods and big-screen televisions.
Mark Grovemiller, Spee-D-Foods vice president, says the company agreed to install the machines to attract potential customers.
