WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- A new type of bar is gaining popularity locally, but it doesn't serve alcoholic and caffeinated beverages. Customers enjoy some very fresh air, oxygenated water or fresh juices instead.
NBC 4's Jon Edwards got an inside look at O2 Heaven, Franklin County's first oxygen bar.
"The No. 1 thing people report after 10 minutes" 'Wow, I just feel so clean. I just feel so fresh. I feel so focused,' " said Jason A. Parsons, founder of O2 Heaven.
Customers are hooked up to a nasal cannula, which is a device used to deliver supplemental oxygen or airflow.
Parsons said customers start to feel a little tingly sensation and report feeling more alert at about the five- to 10-minute mark.
Customers also can opt for various muscle-relaxing techniques.
"People sit down and say, 'Twenty minutes. That seems like a long time.' By the time the whole session is over they feel like it's been two minutes," Parsons said.
The cost is about $1 per minute, sold in 10- and 20-minute sessions.
Customers also can meet up with Rico, the bar's pet chameleon, or look at local artists' works.
Parsons made it clear that although they claim no medical benefits from the oxygen bar, patrons will feel better after each session.
"I had one woman that came in here, and we hooked her up to the oxygen. She was on it for about five minutes and she said, 'Oh, my gosh. This is like a massage for your brain," Parsons said.
Some doctors say there have been no proven health benefits to inhaling pure oxygen at oxygen bars. In fact, too much oxygen can be harmful for people with certain medical conditions.
O2 Heaven is located at 20 H S. State St., Westerville. Click here for more information.
