The Coast Guard calls off the search for a Dublin businessman who was swept away from his sailboat Saturday afternoon.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS from the Ottawa County sheriff's office.
Gregory H. Shaw, 64, took prospective buyers on a cruise off Port Clinton on Lake Erie Saturday.
While lowering the sail, a line attached to the jib sheet went under the boat and became tangled in the propeller.
Shaw went into the water with a knife to free the propeller, and a large wave separated him from the boat.
The two people still on board lost sight of him and called 911 to report their captain as missing.
"We’re on Lake Erie -- where the Jet Express goes in. We can’t get the engine started. One of our crew members were in the water … Now we don’t know where he is. We need someone out here immediately," Kelly Russell, 23, of Wooster said during the 911 call.
The sailboat was towed back to port.
Divers from the Ottawa County sheriff’s office and rescuers from the Coast Guard searched for Shaw until late Sunday.
Shaw was an experienced sailor and there was no indication alcohol was involved, according to a report from the sheriff's office.
