COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A suspect remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition Friday morning after an overnight police-involved shooting on the city's Northeast Side.
NBC 4's Tom Brockman reported with the FAST FACTS from local authorities.
A Columbus police officer was on patrol in the area of 2966 Westerville Rd. at about 1:37 a.m. when he observed a suspicious individual in front of Ohio Trailer Supply Inc.
The officer radioed in his location and briefly detained the individual. An officer-in-trouble call and request for backup was dispatched seconds later.
The teen suspect was shot multiple times and was transported to The Ohio State University Medical Center in critical but stable condition, according to an official release.
A handgun was recovered from the suspect at the scene.
Currently, CPD has not said the suspect fired shots.
"You don't have to be fired upon first. If that suspect has the threat, the opportunity, the method to carry out that action, we're justified in using deadly force. Obviously, though, we're going to have to conduct the investigation and see what comes up for the evidence that's collected and the interview we do," Sgt. Rich Weiner told NBC 4.
The officer was not injured.
The suspect has been charged with one count of felonious assault against a police officer.
The officer involved in the shooting is Officer Justin R. Butcher #2450. Butcher is a three-year veteran of CPD and is assigned to 2 Precinct C Company.
Columbus police continue to investigate.
