Suspect Dies After Chase, Police-Involved Shooting

One person is dead and another is in custody after an officer-involved shooting Saturday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A 33-year-old man was killed Saturday in an officer-involved shooting on the city's southwest side.

The shooting occurred on Birch Drive near Old Hickory Drive at about 3:50 p.m.

According to police, a tip was received that a theft would take place at a Kohl's store on West Broad Street.

Police said the suspect was seen running from the store and a pursuit ensued, continuing into a residential neighborhood.

The pursuit ended at the dead end on Birch Drive just south of Greenlawn Cemetery where, police said, the male suspect exited the vehicle and fought with an officer.

"During that altercation the suspect pulled a gun. The officer stepped back, engaged and shot the suspect multiple times,” said Sgt. Rich Weiner, public information officer for the Columbus Division of Police.

Police said the suspect allegedly pulled out a gun and an officer fired several shots.

Officials confirmed that the male suspect was shot and pronounced dead and a 26-year-old female suspect was taken into custody. Police said charges against the female suspect are pending.

"It's unfortunate that the suspect was shot as well as died but in this instance, it's the third shooting within a week involving police officers," said Jim Gilbert, president of the local Fraternal Order of Police chapter. “To physically confront a police officer and have a firearm and potentially use that firearm against the police officer, we're going to defend ourselves. We don't have to wait to be shot. We're going to pull that trigger. We're going to make sure that we go home. We're going to make sure the citizens on the street are safe."

The officer involved is a ten-year veteran with Franklin Township Police.
