HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Officials in Huntington say an underground water leak cost the city tens of thousands of dollars in utility bills.
City Council members were told Saturday that the leak was discovered in February 2009 during a utility cost analysis under new Mayor Kim Wolfe. The 1-inch water line once ran to a drinking water fountain on the west end of Harris Riverfront Park.
City Floodwall Division Superintendent Steve Riggs says the water fountain was damaged several years ago and taken out of service, but the underground line kept on running.
City Budget Manager Darla Bentley says the park's yearly water bill doubled to nearly $86,000 in 2008. She says the bill is expected to drop dramatically now that the line has been shut off.
