WHITEHALL -- Whitehall police fatally shoot a 53-year-old man whom authorities say pointed a firearm at officers Tuesday morning.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS from Whitehall police.
A female said a male walked by her San Jose Lane residence with a shotgun, and she called police.
Police were called to 4464 San Jose Lane at about 7:15 a.m.
Whitehall police responded to the scene and found Richard Napper, 53, in Norton Field Park.
Police said Napper was sitting on the edge of a slide with a shotgun and a beer.
Officers told Napper to drop his weapon. Instead, police said, he turned the shotgun toward police and racked the weapon.
Officers shot Napper and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
"He went straight down to the ground and didn't move," said Matt Straight, a Whitehall-Yearling sophomore, who was getting ready to leave for school.
Officers were not injured.
Authorities have not identified the involved officers.
According to the man's family, he had tried to kill himself twice before.
"He was very awesome and gentle normally," said Mary Moore, Napper's sister. "He's had a mental illness problem for many years and he was on medication for that. He has just gone downhill to this point."
"Suicide by cop is a phenomenon," said Sgt. Dan Kelso, of Whitehall police. "He had no intention whatsoever to negotiate or talk with us and we go here (and he) almost immediately pointed the gun at officers."
