COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A power transformer malfunctions in the Downtown area of Grant Medical Center Wednesday morning. The blown transformer caused some traffic issues and one Downtown evacuation.

NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS from local authorities.

Columbus fire said a transformer blew in the area of Grant Medical Center, on East Town Street, sometime close to 9:30 a.m.

The power transformer malfunctioned and started a fire in an underground facility.

The situation was contained about 10 minutes later, according to CFD.

Authorities said South 6th Street was closed between State and Town streets. It reopened before 10:45 a.m.

East Chapel Street, between South 4th and South 6th streets, was closed for a time. It was reopened to traffic before noon.

Some area traffic lights were affected, specifically on Front, Long, State, South 3rd, East Chapel and Town streets. All traffic lights were functioning before noon.

A power outage at the Wilkins Professional Building, 285 E. State St., may continue through Thursday morning, though.

The building is on the Grant Medical Center campus.

Doctors, office workers and patients were evacuated Wednesday morning.

Patients were transported next door to Grant Medical Center as fire crews put of the fire and started removing smoke from the building.

About 100 people were evacuated from the building while at least 30 patients remained in the Greater Columbus Regional Dialysis Center on backup generators, according to Columbus Fire Chief Sean Moore.

Physician appointments and outpatient services scheduled for Wednesday in the Wilkins Building have been canceled or moved to other treatment areas.

The interruption in electrical service has not impacted patient care in the main hospital, a Grant spokesperson said.

If a patient has a question about his/her appointment, he/she is encouraged to call his/her physician’s office.

The Statehouse said they were not experiencing an outage.

City Hall said they experienced a brief outage; the power was restored in 10 to 15 minutes.

CFD Battalion Chief David Whiting said no one was injured and no one was in any type of immediate danger.

Additional information was not immediately available.
