COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A community group tried to save a building at 1072 E. Long Street from demolition. But it's now just a pile of rubble.
The Bronzeville Association on the near east side had claimed the building, which had been everything from a funeral home, to a nightclub, to a carry-out, to a flop-house, was part of the history of the east side, was torn down by the city Thursday.
The building was built in the 1870's and had been condemned and was considered an eyesore by some neighbors.
"It's part of America that's being destroyed," claimed Willis Brown, who led the effort to save it. "I feel defeated, I feel -- you know -- almost discouraged at local government."
Brown was able to get a two-week extension on the building's life, but the two weeks came and went.
"I think most people don't see a diamond in the rough cause it comes out of the ground and looks awful until it gets its cutting it then produces substance," Brown said.
Neighbors of the building, though, didn't see it the same way.
"No," said neighbor Billie Ridgeforth. "I want the building down today. Can we get it down today? There's trash always around it, we're trying to build up this neighborhood, I would like to see the building gone."
She got her wish.
