Army Paratrooper Survives Fall From Plane

»  Comments | Post a Comment

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A skydiver who's parachute didn't open properly broke nearly every bone in his body, tore open his aorta, and spent six weeks in a coma, but he survived and is now dealing with his pain with a new device developed by St. Jude's hospital.

Adam Hammond is now a student at Ohio University Chillicothe campus after the bad skydive ended his military career.

Besides breaking almost his entire body, he was in constant pain for months afterward.

"I broke a lot of different things," says Hammond. "I broke my hip, I broke my femur, I broke my femoral artery. I tore my Aorta and after I hit the ground I went into a coma for six weeks."

When he finally healed he dealt with back pains that didn't allow him to walk or even sit for more than 30 minutes.

He underwent surgery at a hospital in Charleston, West Virginia and had an Eon Mini neurostimulator put into his body. It sends an electric shock into his spine which replaces pain with a tingling sensation every time he feels pain.

It has allowed him to go back into rehabilitation.

He plans to attend law school and this spring will become a father.
