CANAL WINCHESTER, Ohio -- The FDA is in the process of establishing nationwide produce safety standards for the growing, harvesting and packing of fresh fruit and vegetables.
But before those policies are formatted and voted on, officials are talking with produce growers in five locations around the country -- including Columbus.
"The real focus here is, 'How do we prevent this? How do we minimize the risk?' And as I said, farmers are already taking steps. The question is: Can we do more?" said Jim O'Hara, produce safety project director.
The FDA will visit the Schacht Family Farm in Canal Winchester, along with farms in four other cities, collecting commentary to consider during policy-making.
"We're hoping to find those reasonable practices, those policies that are doable that won't strongly impact the consumer. But there may be those kinds of consequences and we need to realize it will happen," O'Hara said.
