COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A Columbus police officer was shot on the city's west side early Saturday.
The incident began at 1:39 a.m. when Officer Michael Shannon stopped a suspicious person on the grounds of the Lake Eden Apartment complex near Station Road and Sullivant Avenue on the west side. Officer Shannon approached the suspect on foot and was immediately attacked without provocation, according to Columbus police.
The suspect pulled a gun and shot Officer Shannon during the attack, police said. The suspect was seen fleeing the area on foot.
Columbus SWAT personnel responded and searched a nearby apartment where the suspect was believed to be hiding. A person from the apartment was taken into custody and questioned by investigators.
The suspect in the shooting, identified as 21-year-old Gregory Martinez, was taken into custody and charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of felonious assault on a police officer.
The suspect's photo will not be released at this time, police said.
Officer Shannon was transported to Mount Carmel West Hospital in stable condition.
Officer Shannon is a 7-year veteran with the division. He is expected to undergo surgery for a gunshot wound to his leg.
This incident is being investigated by the Critical Incident Response Team.
