CLEVELAND, Ohio--U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich says the Democratic health care bill that may reach the House floor this week leaves patients "financially vulnerable to insurance companies" by requiring them to buy private insurance policies.
In a guest column in The Plain Dealer on Sunday, the Democrat from Cleveland says the proposal fails to protect people from financial catastrophe caused by injury or illness.
He says the bill President Barack Obama is proposing is "a step in the wrong direction" because it lacks a strong public option and protection for states that want a single-payer plan.
Democrats hold a 253-178 majority in the House and need 216 votes for passage.
Kucinich says the plan gives insurance companies loopholes to deny care and leave patients with bills they can't pay.
